The Molluscum Contagiosum Diagnostic Tool for Parents ‘MCDTP’

The MCDTP (opposite) is a two page booklet that uses 4 images and key text to help you identify whether a spot, lump or bump on your child's skin is Molluscum Contagiosum.

Although many images of Molluscum Contagiosum are available on the internet, this is the first, we know of, that has been developed with parents and dermatologists, and validated to show if it is accurate.

How to use the MCDTP?

Download the MCDTP, read the two pages and view the images. Compare the text, alongside the images to your child's skin. Following this comparison, you can make an educated decision whether your child has Molluscum Contagiosum.

What if I think my child has Molluscum Contagiosum

Diagnosis can be confirmed by your GP, however there is little treatment available to remove the spots. This condition can be managed by parents without consulting with a doctor or nurse. If you are visiting for a separate condition, you may wish to ask your GP to confirm your diagnosis.

If the spots become red, inflamed, or infected you may need to visit your GP for treatment.

How accurate is the MCDTP?

The MCDTP was validated with children and their parents in GP practices in South Wales. Parental diagnosis was compared to that by the GP and the data analysis showed:

  • In all parents who think your child has MC, 76.1% are correct.
  • In parents who feel confident or very confidence in that your child has MC, 81.2% are correct.
  • The tool is especially good at ruling out MC (96.2% of negative diagnoses were correct)
